Web Page Design Courses | So You Want To Be An Astrophysicist? Part 2.0 – GRE At [Dynamics Of Cats]

So what do you do?

First you request to the departments.
There are 35 astronomy departments in the US with a PhD program, and a few sub-departments inside of production departments.
As a rule, go right away to the subdepartment web site you are applying to and read delicately (ie do not go to the Graduate School at the University, until/if the subdepartment indicates you should), then do as they say.
Application deadlines should be around christmas, possibly only before or after. Most places pierce comparatively rapidly on the preference process, to obtain offers out early sufficient that people have time to revisit (most US places will invited US possibilities to visit, many will pay or part-pay is to trip).
Decisions deadline is April 15th, that is to say, you have until then to accept, after that the subdepartment may back out the offer (yes, they may grip it open, but they will possibly be overcommitted or wanting to pierce on any watchful list candidates; greatfully do make your thoughts up by the 15th unless there are well-developed extenuating circumstances).
Foreign grad field – note this is early, ample progressing than, eg, universities in Europe make decisions. You skip the deadline, chances are you’re out of disagreement for a year.

Research the departments you’re applying to.
That is pardonable now on the web.
Take the time to do so.
Find out what investigate is completed in the not similar departments, who is there, the age profile, the tyro population, examine spontaneous tyro web sites, tedious expertise blogs, pretentious organizational blurbs – everything.
This is your life.
Do the work.
Start early, take records and take the time.

So, acknowledgment preference is completed by the subdepartment (or possibly a sub-set of the subdepartment if you’re submitting an application astrophysics in a joint production and astro department).
It is a cabinet (always a committee), membership changes any year, typically (or not).
There is a chair. That is a person, and that person may be dealt with.
Decision is not anynomous or robotic. If in doubt, meeting the person (email preferred), inquire questions.
A great cabinet will have a merge of people: the one who only goes by the GRE score; the one who likes a great GPA; the one who only likes students from universities they’ve been to (or listened of); the one who thinks investigate is all important; the one who delicately reads the testimonial letters, and the one who thinks actions display eagerness and fascination are important.
There may even be that many people on the committee…

The cabinet will have as well many applications (they wish) and (some) wish to cut on a few pre-set criteria.
A lot of places cut on GRE theme score, or GPA or both.
Most everybody says they have a “preferred minimum score”, but many will look next the cut-off (a few don’t, they only cut the pile).
Some departments diversion the system, given they know the routine is injured and the indicators inaccurate. for instance a few only confess everybody (above a few minimum cut) and figure they’ll fall short a few out (so look at sizes of incoming vs connoisseur classes – 20-30% rubbing is normal, aloft than that, examine what is going on; oh, and do a box automobile average, tiny field, Poisson sound dominates…).
Some places disregard theme GRE and look for possibly GPA; great letters; or, interestingly written GRE broad measure (more on that later).
Then there is a few horse-trading (plus look at investigate statements, etc) and then offers are made, typically k times as many offers as aim number of intake, where k is an experimental proportion delicately formed on chronological experience.
Some places make complicated use of watchful lists, others do not.

Important things:
Your investigate matter should be short, clear, giveaway of spelling errors, and greatfully skip the “career counselor” elegant content crap you schooled in high school.
What you wish to know is whether you’re meddlesome in theory, examination or orchestration – or don’t know; and, whether you regard you know what sub-field you wish to work in.
[side-note: when I applied, a long time ago, I didn't know about this convention of the "application essay" in the US. My matter fit on the box on the form, two sentences. Except the final application I sent in - a buddy saw it and mentioned "you can't say that!" and made me write a full page essay. That one place deserted me. Bastards. ]

If you don’t know, be honest and say so, half of the incoming students will change fields anyway. And don’t all say you wish to do cosmology, it is soooo sophomoric. Er, unless, of course, that is what you unequivocally wish to obviously do…
Other critical thing – don’t say you desperately wish to do, say, VLBI observations of CO at high redshift, if there is no one at all at the establishment you’re applying to who does that stuff! Either customize applications to any university (which takes similar to 10 mins electronically) or examine that you’re applying to universities where they obviously do the investigate you affirm to be meddlesome in doing! Most departments are not large sufficient to have a participation in all sub-fields (maybe 1 or 2, but not really, not any more).

So, where should you apply?
Well, unless you’re the next Feynman, and everybody else knows it already, you should be applying to 6-12 places. Less is foolhardy, more is gratuitous.
Usual application rules: request to at least one “safe” place, and one “better than you hope for” place (unless you’re applying to tip places only, in that box have a backup anyway).
Pick places that do investigate that you are meddlesome in; if you’re not sure, collect a place that is large enough.
Check if you’re giveaway to pierce around between investigate groups or advisors after accepting inside of the department, you can in many places, but it is harder a few places than others. Think about whether you’re improved off in a pristine astronomy subdepartment (smaller usually) or a joint production subdepartment (where astro may be a minority activity).
Then request lesser criteria: cost of living (the contribution will be sufficient for you to survive, just, in many places); type of living (big city, town, rural?); weather (like snow? heat? humidity?); two body and family issues.
If you didn’t obtain away from your hometown for undergraduate, then obtain out now, whilst you can!
Oh, and staying at the same university you did your undergrad is a Bad Idea .
Most places dissuade it or strongly daunt it solely is to many well-developed of extenuating circumstances; and it is still a bad idea.

So, where will you obtain in?
Even if you have a best GPA from a tip ranked university and 99% on the GRE, there are still no guarantees on acknowledgment in to any one of the tip 4-6 schools; but any person else will take you, unless you have something unequivocally weird in your application.
After that, the strongest determining non-static in applications is the theme GRE score.
Some places cut on it; a high measure guarantees you a shut look from many places, a low measure means you have to hope something in your application catches someones eye.
What is “high” – well, 50% is the wanton cut-off line in a lot of places. Higher is better, descend is a concern.

So WTF is the GRE. See GRE

It is a set of multi-part selection tests.
The General: quantitative, analytic and written sections.
The Subject (physics).
Scoring is reported by percentile rank, not tender score.
Supposedly normalised.
With disappearing figures receiving the production theme test, this is a concern, given you are unaware if the people now receiving the assessment are more inequitable towards being great in the subject!

Analytic assessment is arrange of similar to an IQ test, similar to one of those dim-witted MENSA tests.
Quantitative is candid and the only grasp is that there’s a lot of it; so rehearse carrying out reticent number and proof problems quickly.
Verbal has altered given I took it.
Here’s the catch: astro and production grad students have the highest GRE broad exam averages. No one will be impressed if you do well on the broad exam, it can only harm you if you do badly. In fact you damn well improved do very well in QA; so Verbal is unequivocally the only discriminant there.

Subject test: it is a friggin’ multi-part selection test. Such tests are innately flawed; receiving them may be gamed, and they are often bad tests of knowledge or skills applicable to research. I depreciate it (and I did very well on it when I took it).
So because the stress on it?
Well, it works.
GRE theme measure correlates pretty with after that opening – it shouldn’t, the skills that make people great at swift multi-part selection tests are not what make great researchers, so it contingency be due to a cross-correlation.
I still fret a lot that you skip great people who do really bad on tests.

So, what is the catch?
The GRE production assessment covers all of production (caveat – I took it a few years ago).
If you’re a US student, then you will probably not have the extent to do very well in it, unless you were receiving intro calculus college classes whilst a subordinate in high college and went true in to modernized electives at a Good University.
The US network starts students as well late in physics, does modular soak courses with bad tyro influence (in both sense, students don’t take extra classes, and particular students keep the element poorly). So many students do not have a thorough preparation in production at the finish of their subordinate year.
An similarly great European tyro will outperform you on the test, on average.
So will the Asian students, if great enough.
(There was a intrigue scanda, or two, a few years ago, assessment forms sole on web sites in south-east Middle East – this has infected both past tests, and stream candidates; universities have responded in not similar ways. Middle East is still the source of a few of the very best students, but they find it harder to advance to the US to study.)
Other catch: elite assessment receiving dates are Nov/Dec – the measure from the progressing assessment comes as well late to confirm on the second test. If you take both (expensive) then you improved do improved on the second test. There is a assessment in spring, but then you take the exam with one reduction division of study, that is a gamble.
There is a outrageous amount of review of GRE exams and their burden and how they compare and the representation exams. Looking at the production forums is not indispensably a bad idea.

So, what do you do?
I suggest receiving the November test. You’ll obtain the measure only around christmas break and you can adjust your application strategy. If you do ample worse or improved than predicted, e-mail or phone your advisor, that’s what they’re there for – to advise you. Oh, and speak to your confidant at the commencement of this process. Don’t uncover up out of nowhere in the center of january. and say you need letters of testimonial for PrincetonandHarvard, and, by the way, they’re due tomorrow.
Bring a list of places with names of acknowledgment cabinet chairs, and due dates. Then send short, honest e-mails to remind the confidant the week before they’re due. Don’t worry.

Aside: many universities now do rec letters by website, a few are run by the particular connoisseur schools, others stipulate with commercial providers, that offer customizable rec forms. They are all different.
We Hates Them, We Do!
What ought to streamline, speedup and reduce the effort in essay rec letters is a calamity of heterogenous crap design websites, a few of that are so immorality I will not use them (yes, I know a few connoisseur schools need the departments to use them – know what, indicate the f#@king e-mail in yourselves if you contingency – there is one commercial supply I will not use at all, the one that requires the expertise to pointer off on a conditions of use consent to submit a e-mail – any dept doesn’t similar to this, I’ll be cheerful to send a e-mail handwritten in #2 pencil on yellow paper).

Ok, sufficient for now. There you go, don’t have to fret about it for months yet.
Good luck, and request to Penn State!
